Welcome 3 new Thinkers, we’re now 198 strong 💪
Good morning, this is Thinking Capital. A weekly An occasional mission for you to optimize your financial life. Today’s mission: credit card points.

The Forgotten Bank Account
Credit card points are an abstract form of a savings account or investment that we often forget about when tallying net worth and other financial metrics. They’re passively earned through everyday spend and redeemed for rewards with very little consideration towards optimizing.
While budgeting and creating an actual financial plan for yourself are way more important and impactful, they’re also well covered by other sources and a little like eating steamed vegetables — amazing if the right person is preparing them, but often fairly bland and boring.
So why listen to me?
August 23, 2022 marks 6 years that I’ve been optimizing my spend to collect credit card points for unforgettable experiences. In the past 6 months alone, my partner and I collected over 600,000 points that we’ll be redeeming for over $48,000 worth of travel over the next 6 months. This includes:
3 continents
30 hotel nights
2 roundtrip business class flights
Unforgettable experiences that will last a lifetime!
I used to think that the only way I could achieve hotel or airline status and take upper class flights was through business travel, but ever since the pandemic put an end to work meetings, I’ve been looking for alternate ways to ensure that vacations remain epic.
Introducing ALL WAYS AWAY
ALL WAYS AWAY is a mini-course on maximizing rewards points. It’s a culmination of my learnings over the past 6 years and yes it’s completely free. The course is delivered via a series of hidden blog posts on the website. In order to get started, simply subscribe to the ALL WAYS AWAY Substack and the link to the post will be shared within the “Welcome” email.
If you’re having trouble finding the Welcome email please check your spam folder, or simply reply here and I’ll help you get sorted.
ALL WAYS AWAY Referral Program
I wanted to create a way to reward those who share AWA with friends and family, so I built a far-from-technical referral program. For each person you share AWA with that becomes a subscriber, you’ll get a point. Points can be redeemed for 1:1 time for help choosing a specific credit card, finding awards availability, or planning a YOLO trip.
❤️ Feedback is a Gift
As someone who’s been subscribed to my ramblings for some time now, I’d love your feedback on AWA and how I can supplement the first three lessons with additional content to address unanswered questions you may have.
If you love it, the best thing you can do is share it and the next best thing you can do is write me a one sentence review that I’ll add to the homepage :)
Cheers,
Armand
